Sandton Skyline Aerial View – 140 West Street, Michelangelo Towers and The Leonardo

Aerial view of Sandton Central, Johannesburg, showing the rapidly evolving skyline during a major period of commercial and high-rise development. The photograph captures several of Sandton’s landmark buildings, including Michelangelo Towers, 140 West Street, and The Leonardo under construction, alongside the surrounding office, residential and mixed-use developments that have transformed Sandton into one of Africa’s major business districts.

Prominently visible within the developing skyline is 140 West Street, the landmark commercial office development designed by Paragon Architects and developed by Zenprop. The project comprises a 10-storey North Tower and a 14-storey South Tower, connected by a dramatic multi-volume glazed atrium and landscaped podium. Its towers were deliberately designed to diverge from one another in response to the site’s unusually narrow footprint, creating the distinctive sculptural form visible from the surrounding city. The development contains approximately 27,000 m² of P-grade office space and was completed in 2017.

At the time this photograph was taken, The Leonardo, at 75 Maude Street, was still under construction in the foreground/right portion of the developing skyline. The completed tower would rise to approximately 227 metres and become a defining feature of Sandton’s skyline. The photograph therefore provides a valuable historical record of Sandton during a period of exceptional construction activity.

Also prominent is Michelangelo Towers, the 34-storey mixed-use landmark completed in 2005. Together with 140 West Street, The Leonardo and the numerous office developments surrounding them, these buildings illustrate Sandton’s transition from a largely suburban environment into a dense, internationally recognised commercial centre.
