ransnet Class 15E Electric Locomotive – Sishen–Saldanha Iron Ore Railway

Transnet Class 15E electric locomotive 15-014 is captured hauling a heavy freight consist across the dry landscape of South Africa’s Northern Cape on the Sishen–Saldanha iron ore railway. The photograph highlights the scale and engineering character of one of the world’s most important heavy-haul rail corridors, where powerful electric locomotives transport bulk mineral exports from the iron-ore mines around Sishen to the deep-water port at Saldanha Bay. The locomotive’s distinctive red, yellow and grey Transnet livery contrasts sharply with the blue sky, reddish earth and sparse vegetation of the Northern Cape landscape, while the extensive overhead electrification infrastructure emphasises the specialised nature of the railway.

Location: Sishen–Saldanha Iron Ore Line, Northern Cape, South Africa. The 861-kilometre Orex railway connects the iron-ore mining region around Sishen with the export facilities at Saldanha Bay. The purpose-built heavy-haul line was constructed in the 1970s and is one of the country’s most strategically important freight corridors. Transnet Freight Rail operates the route, which carries iron ore for export from the Northern Cape to the Atlantic coast. Transnet describes the railway as a purpose-built single heavy-haul line, originally constructed to support the expansion of South Africa’s iron-ore export industry.

Locomotive Class: South African Class 15E. Locomotive number 15-014 is one of 76 Class 15E electric locomotives built for Transnet Freight Rail between 2009 and 2013. The class was specifically developed for the Sishen–Saldanha Orex corridor and entered service from 2010. The Class 15E uses a Co-Co wheel arrangement and was designed for operation under the line’s unusual 50 kV AC, 50 Hz electrification system.

Designer and Manufacturers: The Class 15E was developed through a partnership involving Mitsui, Toshiba, DCD-Dorbyl’s RSD division and Union Carriage & Wagon. Mitsui was responsible for the design, Toshiba supplied the electrical and propulsion equipment, DCD-Dorbyl supplied major mechanical components including the monoblock cast frame and bogies, while Union Carriage & Wagon in Nigel constructed the locomotive bodies and carried out assembly.
