Aerial view of the Port of Ngqura, one of South Africa’s newest deep-water commercial ports, located in Algoa Bay at Coega, north-east of Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape. The photograph captures the port’s extensive breakwater system, sheltered harbour, container terminal, cargo berths, access roads and surrounding undeveloped land within the rapidly expanding Coega industrial precinct.
The Port of Ngqura became operational in 2009 and forms an important component of the Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ). Its deep-water facilities were developed to accommodate large container vessels and support international trade routes serving Southern Africa, with the container terminal providing four berths and deep-water access.
The photograph also highlights the scale of the engineered coastal landscape. Massive breakwaters protect the harbour entrance and create a sheltered basin for shipping operations, while extensive road and industrial infrastructure extends inland. The port is designed as a multi-cargo facility handling containers, dry bulk, liquid bulk, automotive and breakbulk cargo.
Today, Ngqura remains a key logistics gateway for the Eastern Cape and is closely integrated with the Coega SEZ. Further development is planned for the port, including a new liquid bulk terminal intended to support the relocation of liquid-bulk activities from the former Port Elizabeth port.
