uMhlanga Lighthouse and Beverly Hills Hotel on the Durban Coastline

The uMhlanga Lighthouse is one of the area’s best-known landmarks. Completed in 1954, the 21-metre cylindrical concrete lighthouse was built to replace the deteriorating Bluff Lighthouse and was first lit on 25 November 1954. The lighthouse is automated and remains an important navigational aid along the KwaZulu-Natal coast.

On the right is the historic Beverly Hills Hotel, which has stood prominently on the uMhlanga beachfront since 1964. The hotel was the first hotel developed by Sol Kerzner and became one of KwaZulu-Natal’s most recognisable luxury coastal hotels. It occupies a prime position between the uMhlanga lighthouse and the famous uMhlanga pier.

The lighthouse is also closely associated with the neighbouring Oyster Box Hotel, whose property has historically served as the lighthouse’s custodian. Together, the lighthouse, beachfront hotels and promenade form one of the most recognisable coastal landscapes in South Africa.
