Piazza De Ferrari became the point where these new avenues converged, resulting in an unusually diverse architectural setting that combines historic palaces, government buildings, financial institutions, theatres and public spaces.

The Architect was Cesare Gamba, with engineer Giuseppe Tallero involved in the later development of the project. The building’s development extended over a lengthy period, beginning with Gamba’s early proposals and culminating in the completed structure in the early 1920s. Heritage documentation records the final project as being completed in 1924.

The Architectural Style of the Palazzo della Regione Liguria is generally described as Neo-Mannerist, with a broader historicist and eclectic character. Its formal composition reflects the architectural ambitions of the period, when commercial and institutional buildings in Genoa frequently adopted monumental historic references to project permanence, authority and prestige. The façade is arranged over several levels above a substantial arcade, with evenly spaced windows, pilasters and classical detailing creating a strong horizontal rhythm. The building’s restrained ornamentation contrasts deliberately with the exuberant Palazzo della Nuova Borsa elsewhere on the square, demonstrating the architectural diversity that developed around Piazza De Ferrari during the early twentieth century.

The Building Use has changed considerably since its original construction. The Palazzo della Regione Liguria was initially associated with the shipping industry through the Navigazione Generale Italiana and subsequently passed through different ownership arrangements before becoming the headquarters and institutional seat of the Liguria regional government. Today it accommodates government offices and representative functions for Regione Liguria. The regional administration continues to use the building as an important institutional address, and the historic structure occasionally opens its interior to the public through cultural initiatives such as Palazzi Svelati.

At the centre of the photograph is the monumental Piazza De Ferrari fountain, one of Genoa’s most recognisable urban features. Designed by architect Cesare Crosa di Vergagni and completed in 1936, the circular bronze fountain was donated by the Piaggio family and became the defining centrepiece of the square. Its broad basin and multiple streams of water form a dramatic geometric counterpoint to the surrounding buildings. The fountain was subsequently enhanced with additional water features in 2001.
