Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium | Gqeberha

This aerial photograph presents a striking view of the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha, formerly Port Elizabeth, in South Africa’s Eastern Cape. Located in the North End area of the city beside North End Lake, the stadium is one of South Africa’s most recognisable examples of contemporary sports architecture and was purpose-built as one of the principal venues for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The photograph captures the stadium within its broader urban, sporting and industrial context, showing how the distinctive arena sits between established residential neighbourhoods, commercial and industrial development, major roads and the waterfront landscape. The stadium was completed in 2009 and became a major architectural landmark for the city.

The defining feature of the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is its spectacular white roof, composed of a repeating series of curved structural trusses and translucent membrane sections. Viewed from above, the roof creates an almost floral or petal-like pattern around the oval spectator bowl. The arrangement has often been associated with a sunflower, reflecting the natural character of the region and giving the stadium a distinctive identity within the South African stadium landscape. The roof combines metal-clad three-chord trusses with membrane fields, producing alternating opaque and translucent sections that create changing patterns of light and shade inside the stadium.

The stadium was designed by gmp – von Gerkan, Marg and Partners, working with South African architectural practices including Architectural Design Associates, Dominic Bonnesse Architects and GAPP Architects and Urban Designers. The international and local design team developed a venue that combined a large-span structural roof with a highly functional multi-tiered spectator arrangement. The stadium’s raised platform and prominent roof silhouette allow it to remain visually distinctive from the surrounding city, while its two-storey colonnaded circulation areas create a strong architectural base beneath the floating roof structure.

The image provides an excellent view of the stadium’s relationship with North End Lake, visible immediately to the right of the complex. The water body provides an open landscape edge that contrasts strongly with the dense urban development surrounding the stadium. The aerial perspective also reveals the extensive pedestrian plazas, landscaped areas, access roads, parking facilities and circulation routes established around the venue. Beyond the stadium, the photograph shows a mixture of established residential neighbourhoods and large-scale commercial and industrial buildings, illustrating the transformation of the wider North End precinct associated with the World Cup investment programme.

The stadium was completed in 2009, with construction completed in June of that year. It was built by a consortium involving BAM International and Grinaker-LTA, with the venue designed to accommodate approximately 46,000 spectators. The stadium hosted major matches during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, including the quarter-final and third-place playoff, and subsequently became an important venue for South African football, rugby and major entertainment events.

Structurally, the stadium demonstrates the possibilities of lightweight long-span tensile architecture. The roof contains approximately 21,300 square metres of membrane, using PTFE-coated fibreglass material, while the major roof structure incorporates large curved trusses extending around the stadium bowl. The roof system was engineered to provide substantial weather protection while maintaining the open, lightweight visual character that defines the building.
