This architectural photograph captures the distinctive Sandton Eye, the mixed-use development at the corner of Rivonia Road and West Street in Sandton, Johannesburg, prominently occupied by the Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel. The building is one of Sandton’s most recognisable hospitality and commercial developments, positioned directly opposite the Sandton Gautrain Station and within the heart of Johannesburg’s major financial and business district. The Sandton Eye was completed around 2009, placing its development within the major transformation of Sandton that accompanied the arrival of the Gautrain.

The photograph shows the complex from the street, highlighting its layered contemporary architecture, extensive glazing, curved building elements, commercial frontage and prominent hotel signage.

The Sandton Eye is more than a conventional hotel building. It forms a mixed-use sectional-title developmentincorporating the Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel together with offices, retail space, conference facilities, parking and other commercial components. Documentation submitted to the Competition Commission describes the development as comprising 46 sections, including the hotel, offices, retail areas, conference facilities, a private penthouse, storerooms and parking bays.

The Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel forms the principal hospitality component of the development. The hotel comprises approximately 220 rooms, together with conference facilities, the Central One Restaurant and Bar, an outdoor swimming pool and sun deck, and a fitness centre. Its position immediately opposite the Gautrain station makes it particularly significant within Johannesburg’s business-tourism infrastructure, providing direct access to the Gautrain network linking Sandton with central Johannesburg, Pretoria and O.R. Tambo International Airport.

The Sandton Eye has also accommodated significant commercial activity beyond the hotel. Office occupiers have included professional and financial-services businesses, while the building continues to function as a prestigious Sandton business address. Talis Property, for example, identifies its headquarters as occupying the 12th floor of the Sandton Eye.

The development’s location is particularly important. Sandton has evolved from a primarily suburban commercial node into one of Africa’s major financial centres, with the Sandton Eye occupying a strategically prominent position close to Sandton City, Nelson Mandela Square, the Sandton Convention Centre, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and numerous multinational corporate headquarters. The Radisson Blu itself describes its location as being in the heart of Sandton’s business district.

The surrounding road infrastructure visible in the photograph reinforces the importance of the location. Rivonia Road and West Street form major movement corridors through Sandton, while the intersection in front of the building accommodates multiple traffic signals, pedestrian crossings and access routes. The photograph therefore captures not only the architecture but also the relationship between a major commercial property and Johannesburg’s metropolitan transport infrastructure.
