Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Nairobi, Kenya

The Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) is one of Nairobi’s most recognisable architectural landmarks and an important symbol of Kenya’s post-independence development. Located on Harambee Avenue in Nairobi’s Central Business District, the complex was commissioned in the 1960s and officially opened in September 1973. It was developed as a major international conference and government facility and quickly became an important centre for meetings, conferences and international events. The KICC’s distinctive tower rises approximately 105 metres and comprises 32 floors, according to the Council on Vertical Urbanism’s current building data. Its cylindrical tower, concrete construction and sculptural geometric forms are characteristic of the modernist architecture of the period. The wider complex includes the tower, conference facilities, amphitheatre and plenary hall, creating one of Nairobi’s most distinctive architectural compositions.
