This aerial photograph captures Atholl Square Shopping Centre in Sandown, Sandton, Johannesburg, with the surrounding suburban, commercial and industrial landscape extending towards the eastern parts of the city. Located at the corner of Katherine Street and Wierda Road East, Atholl Square served as a neighbourhood retail centre for the surrounding Sandton communities. The centre incorporated retail outlets, restaurants, offices and medical practices, with its layout organised around a central atrium and supported by extensive parking.
The photograph, captured in February 2015, provides a valuable record of the area before the later redevelopment of Atholl Square. The view illustrates the contrast between the landscaped residential suburbs in the foreground, the commercial properties around Katherine Street and the much denser industrial and commercial development beyond. The broader urban landscape demonstrates the rapid transition of Sandton from a predominantly suburban environment into one of Johannesburg’s major business and commercial regions.
Atholl Square was subsequently closed for redevelopment in February 2021. The replacement development was designed by Ikemeleng Architects as a new two-level, approximately 13,000 m² shopping centre, incorporating a new public transport connection and a prominent pylon element intended to form an eastern gateway to Sandton.
