This aerial photograph captures the eastern Johannesburg CBD, looking across the dense commercial and industrial fabric of the inner city towards the city’s extensive road network and surrounding urban landscape. The image prominently features Jewel City in the foreground, identifiable by its contemporary residential blocks and distinctive yellow-and-dark façade, set within the much older urban fabric of the Johannesburg CBD. The development forms part of the broader regeneration of the eastern inner city and connects with the neighbouring Maboneng precinct.
Jewel City occupies six city blocks between Commissioner and Main Streets, Berea Road and Joe Slovo Drive. Once a largely closed-off area associated with Johannesburg’s diamond and precious-metals trade, the precinct was redeveloped into a mixed-use neighbourhood incorporating residential apartments, offices, retail, education, healthcare, sport and public spaces. The first phase was completed in 2020, with GASS Architecture Studios responsible for the architectural design of Jewel City’s redevelopment.
The elevated view also highlights the relationship between Jewel City, the surrounding Maboneng precinct, established CBD buildings and the major elevated road infrastructure that cuts through the eastern side of Johannesburg’s city centre. The photograph provides a strong visual record of the contrast between older industrial and commercial buildings and the newer residential-led regeneration taking place across the inner city.
