The Eiffel Tower is one of the world’s most recognisable structures and an enduring symbol of Paris. This photograph presents the monument from the Champ de Mars, looking directly towards its four monumental iron piers and the soaring lattice structure above. The broad perspective places the tower centrally within the landscape, while the surrounding lawns, mature trees, visitors and temporary pedestrian infrastructure provide a sense of the scale and continued public importance of the site.
Constructed for the 1889 Exposition Universelle, the Eiffel Tower was conceived as a monumental demonstration of French engineering and industrial capability. The exhibition was held to commemorate the centenary of the French Revolution, and the tower was intended to serve as a spectacular gateway to the fair. The project was selected from 107 proposals and was developed by entrepreneur and engineer Gustave Eiffel, engineers Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier, and architect Stephen Sauvestre. The original engineering concept came from Koechlin and Nouguier, while Sauvestre substantially developed its architectural appearance.
Construction began on 26 January 1887, with the foundations established on the Champ de Mars. The four principal piers were assembled from prefabricated iron components manufactured at Eiffel’s works in Levallois-Perret. The construction was completed with remarkable speed for such an ambitious structure: the tower was finished on 31 March 1889, only two years, two months and five days after work began. It was formally opened to visitors during the Universal Exhibition and immediately became a defining feature of the Paris skyline.
The engineering of the Eiffel Tower was revolutionary for its time. The structure consists of approximately 18,038 individual metallic components, joined by around 2.5 million rivets, with approximately 7,300 tonnes of iron incorporated into the tower. Its four curved legs are connected by a complex lattice of iron members, producing the characteristic open framework that allows the structure to withstand wind while keeping its overall mass relatively light. The tower’s form was therefore not simply an aesthetic statement; its geometry was fundamentally connected to structural performance.
From this viewpoint, the lower portion of the tower is particularly powerful. The four legs spread dramatically across the Champ de Mars before converging upwards, while the large decorative arches spanning between the piers provide one of the monument’s most recognisable architectural details. These arches were among the elements introduced by Stephen Sauvestre when the original engineering proposal was transformed into a more monumental architectural composition.
