Completed in 2009 ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Cape Town Stadium replaced the former Green Point Stadium and was designed as a major sporting and events venue. Its distinctive elliptical form, translucent façade and sweeping roof create a sculptural landmark that was deliberately designed to respond to its exceptional setting between the mountain and ocean. The stadium’s translucent outer membrane changes in appearance according to daylight and weather conditions, helping integrate the large structure into the surrounding landscape.
The stadium was designed by Stadium Architects JV, a joint venture comprising gmp Architekten, Louis Karol Architecture and Point Architects. Point Architects brought together several South African practices, including Jakupa Architects, Munnik Visser Architects, Comrie Wilkinson Architects and urban designers, and Paragon Architects. The stadium received the IOC/IAKS Award for first prize in the stadiums for competitions and events category in 2011, recognising its architectural and operational qualities.
