Bosjes Chapel Gardens and Mountain Landscape in the Breedekloof Valley, Western Cape

The landscape surrounding the Bosjes Chapel was designed to establish a strong relationship between architecture, agriculture and the natural environment. The gardens incorporate indigenous planting, flowering species, orchards and open spaces, creating a series of distinct yet interconnected outdoor environments. Meandering pathways provide access through the grounds while framing views towards the mountains and the chapel. The planting and landscape design reinforce the sense that the buildings are part of a much larger rural composition rather than isolated architectural objects.

Visible in the distance is the distinctive white Bosjes Chapel, designed by Steyn Studio and completed in 2016. Its sculptural roof was conceived in response to the surrounding mountain forms, while the chapel’s open glazed walls deliberately connect the interior with the valley, vineyards and gardens. The architecture draws inspiration from Psalm 36:7 and from the simplicity of historic Moravian mission churches found in the Western Cape.

The composition demonstrates how the Bosjes development uses landscape as an integral part of its architectural identity. The long central path establishes a visual axis through the gardens, while the surrounding planting softens the transition between the formal estate and the working agricultural landscape. The mountains dominate the horizon, providing a dramatic sense of scale and reinforcing the relationship between the contemporary chapel and the geological landscape that inspired its form.
