BOSJES Kombuis Restaurant – Contemporary Architecture in the Cape Winelands

BOSJES Kombuis is a striking contemporary restaurant at the BOSJES estate in the Breedekloof Valley near Worcester, Western Cape, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Waaihoek Mountains. Designed to sit sensitively within its rural setting, the building combines a simple gabled form with extensive glazing, natural stone and timber, creating a strong connection between the interior dining space and the surrounding landscape. The architecture reflects the broader design language of the BOSJES estate, where contemporary structures are carefully integrated into the historic agricultural environment.

The restaurant was designed by London-based architect Coetzee Steyn, who was also responsible for the celebrated BOSJES Chapel on the estate. The architecture uses a restrained palette of stone, steel, timber and glass, with the steeply pitched roof giving the building a distinctive silhouette. The exposed structural elements and large glazed openings create a balance between a modern agricultural aesthetic and the traditional forms associated with the Cape Winelands. The stone-clad wall bearing the BOSJES Kombuis name provides a strong material anchor to the otherwise transparent building.

BOSJES Kombuis forms part of the wider BOSJES estate, a historic farm that combines hospitality, agriculture, gardens and contemporary architecture. The restaurant’s position allows visitors to experience uninterrupted views towards the surrounding mountain ranges, while the landscaped grounds provide a transition between the building and the wider rural landscape. The architecture deliberately remains relatively low in scale, allowing the dramatic natural setting to remain the dominant feature.

The building is particularly effective when viewed from the surrounding gardens, where its angular roofline and glazed elevations contrast with the organic forms of the landscape. The combination of contemporary architecture, indigenous planting, lawns and mountain scenery creates a distinctive visual identity for the restaurant. The design also complements the nearby BOSJES Chapel, whose sculptural white concrete form has become one of the estate’s best-known architectural landmarks. Together, the two buildings demonstrate how contemporary architecture can be introduced into a historic rural landscape without overwhelming its character.

The interior and hospitality concept were developed with designer Liam Mooney, while the restaurant’s extensive glazing makes the surrounding landscape an integral part of the dining experience. Rather than treating the mountain views as a backdrop, the architecture frames them through the building’s transparent façades and carefully positioned openings.
