The most prominent architectural landmark is DHL Stadium, formerly known as Cape Town Stadium. Constructed between 2007 and 2009 for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the stadium was designed by German practice gmp Architekten, with Volkwin Marg, Hubert Nienhoff and Robert Hormes working in association with Louis Karol Architects and Point Architects in Cape Town. The stadium accommodates approximately 68,000 spectators and is distinguished by its circular form, sweeping roof and lightweight structural expression.
The aerial perspective reveals the stadium’s carefully planned relationship with the surrounding Green Point landscape. Extensive landscaped areas and sporting facilities surround the main stadium bowl, while the road network forms a strong connection between Green Point, the city centre and the V&A Waterfront. The geometry of the stadium contrasts with the irregular urban fabric around it, making the building particularly legible from above.
Immediately east and north of the stadium is the V&A Waterfront, a 123-hectare mixed-use precinct incorporating commercial buildings, residential development, retail, hospitality, recreation and an active working harbour. The Waterfront occupies part of Cape Town’s historic docklands and has evolved through decades of redevelopment while retaining its maritime and industrial functions.
