Traditional Basotho Village Overlooking Katse Reservoir, Lesotho Highlands

This photograph captures a traditional Basotho mountain settlement overlooking the spectacular Katse Reservoir in the highlands of Lesotho. Scattered across the steep green slopes are numerous circular stone rondavels with distinctive conical thatched roofs, rectangular masonry houses with corrugated-metal roofing, stone livestock enclosures and cultivated agricultural plots. Beyond the settlement, the deep blue waters of the reservoir wind through a dramatic landscape of rounded sandstone and basalt mountains, creating a powerful visual combination of traditional rural architecture, modern water infrastructure and the high-altitude environment of the Mountain Kingdom.
