Although the vessel was constructed in Norway, it sailed to South Africa after its launch so that its highly specialised subsea mineral sampling equipment could be installed and commissioned in Cape Town. The vessel was subsequently deployed by Debmarine Namibia for offshore diamond exploration in Namibian waters. Sources confirm that the vessel sailed from Norway to Cape Town, where its subsea sampling system, launch and recovery system and treatment plant were installed.
The vessel visible in the photograph is the MV SS Nujoma, owned and operated by Debmarine Namibia, a 50/50 joint venture between the Government of Namibia and De Beers Group. It was specifically developed as a diamond exploration and sampling vessel rather than as a conventional cargo or recovery ship. Debmarine Namibia describes the SS Nujoma as its dedicated exploration and sampling vessel, alongside its fleet of marine diamond recovery vessels.
Architect: Not applicable in the conventional architectural sense. The SS Nujoma was designed and engineered as a highly specialised offshore mining and exploration vessel. The ship was built by Kleven Verft in Ulsteinvik, Norway, with its specialised subsea mission equipment subsequently installed in Cape Town. The vessel incorporates sophisticated marine, mineral-processing, electrical, positioning and sampling technologies designed specifically for offshore diamond exploration.
Completed: 2016, with the vessel launched at the Kleven Verft shipyard in Norway on 9 January 2016 and subsequently fitted with its specialist exploration equipment in Cape Town. It was officially inaugurated in Walvis Bay, Namibia, on 15 June 2017.
Engineering Style: The SS Nujoma is an example of highly specialised offshore engineering, combining a conventional ocean-going hull with extensive industrial processing and subsea exploration equipment. The vessel measures approximately 113 metres in length and has a gross tonnage of 7,971 tonnes. It is diesel-electric powered and was designed to accommodate a crew of up to approximately 80 people. A helicopter deck is incorporated into the vessel’s design, supporting offshore operations and crew logistics.
The most visually distinctive feature in this photograph is the extensive collection of equipment mounted on the aft portion of the vessel. Large structural frameworks, lifting equipment, pipework, winches, reels and other machinery form a complex industrial arrangement on the working deck. The SS Nujoma was developed specifically to improve exploration and sampling capabilities, allowing larger samples to be collected and processed more efficiently than with its predecessor.
The vessel was reportedly a US$157 million investment and represented a major technological development for Debmarine Namibia. Its equipment was designed to collect larger samples and obtain more information from each sampling operation, while its exploration capabilities allow the company to assess marine diamond resources before recovery activities take place.
The Cape Town setting is equally important to the story captured by this photograph. Behind the SS Nujoma are large cylindrical storage tanks, industrial buildings, loading infrastructure and port berths. Further across the harbour, container vessels are being serviced by towering ship-to-shore cranes, illustrating the multiple functions performed by Cape Town’s port.
