Construction of 1 Discovery Place began in October 2014, with the project involving a substantial nine-level basement, a podium and two nine-storey office towers connected by a bridge. The development was designed to accommodate Discovery’s expanding workforce and was conceived as a major landmark within the Sandton Central precinct.
The building was completed in 2017 and is now known as 1 Discovery Place, serving as Discovery’s Johannesburg headquarters. Designed by Boogertman + Partners, the approximately 150,000 m² development is characterised by its interconnected towers, large internal atria and emphasis on collaboration, wellness and natural light.
The image also records an important period in Sandton’s transformation, as major commercial developments were reshaping the district into one of Johannesburg’s principal business centres.
