This photograph captures Luoto Island, better known by its Swedish name Klippan, in Helsinki’s southern harbour area. The small rocky island lies just offshore from Kaivopuisto and beside Valkosaari, with the historic Klippan restaurant villa prominently visible among the trees. Passenger vessels and harbour boats in the surrounding waters emphasise the island’s close relationship with Helsinki’s maritime landscape.
The island’s principal building is a distinctive wooden villa completed in 1898 and designed by Finnish architect Selim A. Lindqvist. It was purpose-built as a restaurant and has retained its restaurant function through much of its history, making it an important part of Helsinki’s historic summer restaurant culture. The building is characterised by its picturesque late-19th-century wooden architecture and prominent tower-like roof form.
Klippan has a long and colourful history as a destination for dining and social gatherings. The restaurant operated through much of the 20th century, although its operations were interrupted during the First World War, the Prohibition period and the Second World War. In 2026, the City of Helsinki sold the buildings on the island to Ön Klippan Ab, which plans to restore the historic buildings and explore new visitor experiences, including restaurant and sauna facilities.
