Johannesburg CBD Skyline and Jewel City – Aerial View of Inner-City Regeneration

This expansive aerial photograph captures the Johannesburg Central Business District and its eastern urban landscape, with Jewel City visible within the dense city fabric in the lower-central portion of the image. The photograph shows the contrast between Johannesburg’s established commercial and industrial buildings, modern residential developments and the extensive network of elevated roads and major transport routes serving the inner city.

Jewel City forms part of a major urban regeneration project in Johannesburg’s eastern CBD and an extension of the neighbouring Maboneng precinct. The development transformed six city blocks into a mixed-use neighbourhood incorporating residential, commercial and retail space, together with public areas, education, healthcare and sports facilities. The redevelopment was completed in September 2020, with GASS Architecture Studios responsible for the architectural design.

The aerial perspective also places Jewel City within the broader context of Johannesburg’s skyline, with prominent high-rise buildings including the Carlton Centre and the ABSA precinct visible towards the centre of the CBD. The extensive road infrastructure in the foreground and across the eastern CBD highlights the relationship between the regenerated precinct and Johannesburg’s established urban transport network.
