Jewel City forms an extension of the Maboneng Precinct and occupies six city blocks between Commissioner and Main Streets, Berea Road and Joe Slovo Drive. The former closed-off area, historically associated with Johannesburg’s precious-metals and diamond trade, was redeveloped into a mixed-use neighbourhood incorporating residential apartments, commercial and retail space, education, healthcare, sport facilities, public recreation and pedestrian spaces.
Designed with GASS Architecture Studios, the development combines the refurbishment of existing city fabric with substantial new construction. The precinct was completed and launched in 2020, representing a significant investment in the regeneration of Johannesburg’s inner city and the reintroduction of residential and public activity into an area that had previously been largely inaccessible to the public.
The photograph is particularly valuable as an aerial record of the relationship between Jewel City, Maboneng, Johannesburg’s commercial core and the city’s major road infrastructure, illustrating the contrast between historic industrial buildings, contemporary residential development and the established high-rise skyline.
