This aerial photograph captures Courtyard Hotel Waterfall City, prominently positioned within the Nexus Waterfallmixed-use precinct in Waterfall City, Midrand. The 10-storey hotel is visible alongside the surrounding Nexus office buildings, landscaped public spaces and developing commercial environment, with the Mall of Africa immediately to the left. The photograph also illustrates the rapid transformation of Waterfall City from a largely undeveloped landscape into one of Gauteng’s major mixed-use business districts.
The Courtyard Hotel forms part of the 32,000 m² Nexus Waterfall precinct, which comprises the hotel, restaurants and P-Grade office buildings arranged around a landscaped central piazza. The development is located on Karkloof Crescent directly opposite Mall of Africa and incorporates pedestrian connections to neighbouring commercial and residential precincts. The wider Nexus development is built above a 2.5-level super-basement serving the complex.
Designed by LYT Architecture, the Courtyard Hotel features a contemporary façade with curved forms, extensive glazing and strong horizontal articulation. The hotel opened on 1 March 2021 and was developed by Attacq for operation by City Lodge Hotel Group. It achieved a 4-Star Green Star Custom Hotel certification from the Green Building Council of South Africa, reflecting the sustainability objectives incorporated into its design and construction.
The development has an interesting history: Nexus Waterfall was originally planned and marketed as The Atria, a mixed-use development on Land Parcel 10 adjacent to the Mall of Africa. Attacq’s earlier development plans referred to The Atria as a precinct incorporating offices and a hotel before the project evolved into what is now known as Nexus Waterfall.
