Cosmo Mall is a major community shopping centre serving Cosmo City and surrounding suburbs in Johannesburg’s north-western region. Located on Malibongwe Drive at the intersection with South Africa Drive/Dawn Road, the mall forms an important retail and community hub along the route towards Lanseria Airport. Developed by the Bentel Group, the centre has grown from its original approximately 22,000 m² development into a complex of approximately 39,800 m² of retail space.
Opened in September 2014, Cosmo Mall was developed as a convenient retail destination for the rapidly growing Cosmo City community. The centre accommodates a broad mix of national retailers, supermarkets, restaurants, financial services and other community-focused businesses, with extensive parking and a taxi facility. The aerial photograph shows the mall’s large, low-rise retail footprint positioned directly alongside Malibongwe Drive, with the dense residential neighbourhood of Cosmo City immediately to the west.
One of the development’s most recognisable features is the Cosmo Mall Pedestrian Bridge, a 410-metre-long pedestrian and cycle connection across Malibongwe Drive. Designed by Rob Bray Architects, with WSP responsible for civil, structural and traffic engineering, the curved bridge was conceived as a landmark gateway between Cosmo City and the shopping centre. Its forked structural supports reference the form of an African acacia tree, while its gradual incline provides wheelchair-friendly access. The bridge opened in early 2016 and is visible as an important connection between the residential community and mall.
