Aerial view of the Cape Town Central Business District, photographed from above the Foreshore and looking towards the city centre and the dramatic backdrop of Table Mountain and Lion’s Head. The image captures one of Cape Town’s defining urban panoramas, combining dense commercial development with the city’s distinctive natural landscape.
Several prominent buildings are visible, including the ABSA Centre, now known as Foreshore Place, the SARS Building at 22 Hans Strydom Avenue, the building carrying Samsung signage, and Portside Tower on the right. Portside, completed in 2014, rises 139 metres and remains Cape Town’s tallest building. It was developed by FirstRand and Old Mutual and designed by dhk Architects together with Louis Karol Architects.
The photograph also records the Cape Town skyline during an important period of transformation. 35 Lower Long, located in the same Foreshore district, had not yet been constructed when this photograph was taken in 2016. The later 86-metre tower was developed by Abland and designed by dhk Architects, replacing an earlier eight-storey office building on the site.
The combination of high-rise commercial buildings, established city streets, Table Mountain, Lion’s Head and the surrounding City Bowl makes this a strong historical record of Cape Town’s evolving CBD.
