The Bosjes Chapel is one of South Africa’s most distinctive examples of contemporary religious architecture, set within the vineyards and dramatic mountain landscape of the Breede Valley in the Western Cape. Designed by South African-born architect Coetzee Steyn of Steyn Studio, the chapel was completed in 2016 and has become an internationally recognised architectural landmark.
The building is characterised by its extraordinary white, undulating concrete roof, which rises dramatically at either side before dipping towards the centre. The sculptural profile was conceived as a response to the surrounding mountain ranges, creating a visual dialogue between the architecture and the landscape. The form also references the curved profiles of historic Cape Dutch gables found throughout the Western Cape.
The chapel’s structure is particularly notable because the thin-shell concrete roof effectively becomes the building’s supporting walls and columns. This structural approach gives the building its remarkable sense of lightness, creating the impression that the white form is floating above the landscape. Large glazed façades open the interior towards the surrounding mountains, vineyards and gardens.
The design draws inspiration from Psalm 36:7, as well as the simplicity of historic Moravian Mission Stations established in the Cape during the nineteenth century. Unlike traditional churches dominated by vertical spires, the Bosjes Chapel deliberately adopts a low, horizontal presence, allowing the surrounding landscape to remain an integral part of the spiritual experience.
The approach to the chapel shown in this photograph emphasises its monumental sculptural form. Broad stone steps lead towards the glazed entrance, while landscaped gardens and a reflecting pool reinforce the building’s connection with its surroundings. The curved roof creates a dramatic architectural silhouette against the mountains and sky.
The chapel contains approximately 430 square metres of floor area and was completed in December 2016. Steyn Studiowas the design architect, with TV3 Architects appointed as project architect. The landscape design was undertaken by CNdV Landscape Architects, while Henry Fagan & Partners were involved in the structural engineering.
Bosjes Chapel has received significant international recognition, including a 2019 Architizer A+Award, and has become an important architectural destination within the Western Cape. Its combination of sculptural architecture, landscape and dramatic mountain setting makes it particularly significant within South African contemporary architecture.
