Absa Towers Main, Johannesburg

This aerial photograph captures Absa Towers Main, now known as Towers Main, rising above the dense urban fabric of Johannesburg’s central business district. The 30-storey modernist tower dominates the centre of the composition, while the surrounding CBD stretches into the distance as a dense landscape of office buildings, commercial properties, residential towers, transport routes and public infrastructure. The prominent digital display at the top of the building, showing a temperature of 25°C, adds a distinctive technological element to the historic tower and illustrates the changing relationship between architecture, branding and digital media in the Johannesburg skyline.

Located at 160 Main Street in Johannesburg, Towers Main forms part of the wider Absa Precinct and has been an important landmark in the city’s inner core for more than five decades. The building was completed in 1970 and rises approximately 140 metres above the CBD. It was originally developed as a major office tower and became closely associated with Absa and its predecessor banking institutions. The tower’s strongly expressed vertical façade and repetitive structural grid reflect the modernist commercial architecture that characterised Johannesburg’s rapid economic expansion during the second half of the twentieth century.

The building’s original identity was associated with Sandglen Towers, developed by Sand Consolidated Investments in the early 1970s before becoming part of the United Bank and subsequently Absa property portfolio. Its position within Johannesburg’s historic financial district placed it among a generation of high-rise buildings that transformed the CBD skyline from the 1960s onwards. The tower’s scale and relatively simple architectural expression reflect an era when large corporate office buildings were designed primarily around efficiency, repetition and the concentration of administrative functions within the city centre.

One of the most striking features visible in this photograph is the large digital screen positioned above the tower. Known as Absa Lumen, the system was installed in 2012–2013 and consisted of four giant LED screens wrapping around the top of the building. The display covered approximately 2,650 square metres and incorporated millions of LEDs, allowing messages and moving imagery to be presented across the tower’s crown. At the time of its installation, the system was promoted as one of the world’s largest commercial visual display installations
