The Ngqura Container Terminal began operations in 2009 and was developed as a major deep-water transhipment hub serving international shipping routes between Southern Africa and markets in Africa, Asia and South America. The terminal has four container berths, a depth of approximately 16 metres and large-scale container-handling infrastructure.
The wider Port of Ngqura is a multi-cargo facility handling containers, dry bulk, liquid bulk, automotive and breakbulk cargo. Its extensive breakwaters provide protection for the harbour, while the surrounding Coega SEZ provides a major industrial and logistics platform connected to the port by road and rail.
The photograph is also a valuable record of the development of this strategically important section of Algoa Bay, showing the scale of land reclamation, coastal engineering and infrastructure required to create one of South Africa’s newest major commercial ports.
