Aerial view of the completed Rea Vaya M1 bridge under construction between Sandton and Alexandra, Johannesburg, capturing one of the major transport infrastructure projects undertaken as part of the city’s Phase 1C Bus Rapid Transit expansion. The bridge crosses the M1 motorway near Lees Street and connects the Rea Vaya corridor from Alexandra and Marlboro towards Sandton.
The distinctive bridge structure is visible at the centre of the photograph, with its central pylon and connecting approaches taking shape above the M1. The surrounding landscape provides a remarkable view of Johannesburg’s contrasting urban fabric, from dense industrial and commercial areas around Wynberg and Marlboro to established residential suburbs and extensive green spaces. The project formed part of the route linking central Johannesburg, Alexandra and the Sandton CBD.
The new bridge over the M1 at Lees Street was completed in 2017 and was designed to accommodate Rea Vaya buses and pedestrians. It forms part of the broader Rea Vaya Phase 1C corridor, which includes dedicated bus lanes connecting Johannesburg, Alexandra and Sandton.
