Aerial view of the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bridge under construction over the M1 highway in Johannesburg, photographed during the development of the Phase 1C corridor linking Sandton, Marlboro and Alexandra. The image captures the bridge’s distinctive central pylon and sweeping approach ramps rising above one of Johannesburg’s busiest motorways.
The bridge forms part of the Rea Vaya BRT infrastructure connecting Katherine Street in Sandton with Lees Street in Marlboro, providing a dedicated route for Rea Vaya buses while also incorporating pedestrian access between Sandton and Alexandra. The approximately 271-metre-long structure includes a cable-stayed main span, with a 52-metre-high pylon, six piers and approximately 40 stay cables.
Construction began in 2015, with the project forming part of the City’s wider Corridors of Freedom programme. The bridge was subsequently completed as part of Rea Vaya Phase 1C infrastructure. Today, it remains an important component of the public transport connection between Alexandra and Sandton, with the route designed to accommodate Rea Vaya buses and pedestrians.
The photograph also provides a remarkable record of Johannesburg’s urban landscape during a major period of infrastructure investment, showing the M1, industrial areas around Wynberg and Marlboro, residential suburbs and the expanding Sandton skyline in the distance.
