This architectural photograph looks upward from within the dense high-rise environment of Paris La Défense, with Tour Alto forming the central focal point. Located in Courbevoie within the La Défense business district west of Paris, Tour Alto is a distinctive contemporary office tower recognised for its rounded, gradually expanding form and highly reflective glass façade. Completed in 2020, the tower rises approximately 150 metres above the La Défense slab and contains 38 storeys. Its unusual silhouette gives it a particularly strong presence within one of Europe’s most concentrated business districts.
Tour Alto was designed by IF Architectes in association with SRA Architectes. The building occupies the former site of the Saisons office building and formed part of the wider redevelopment of the area around the Boulevard Circulaire. Its design responds to the restricted footprint of the site by creating a tower that becomes progressively wider towards the upper levels. Each successive floor shifts slightly outward, producing the building’s characteristic flared profile. This gives the tower an appearance reminiscent of a contemporary glass vase, a comparison frequently associated with its architectural design.
One of Tour Alto’s most distinctive architectural features is its façade. Approximately 3,800 glass scales form a double-skin curtain wall across the tower, producing a highly textured surface that changes appearance according to light, weather and viewing angle. The individual glass elements contribute to both the building’s visual identity and its environmental performance. The façade was engineered to provide insulation and solar control while allowing substantial daylight into the office spaces.
The photograph demonstrates the visual impact of this façade particularly well. Viewed from ground level, the curved tower appears to rise continuously into the sky, with its rounded profile contrasting sharply with the rectilinear office buildings surrounding it. The other towers frame the composition from all four sides, creating a dramatic architectural canyon. Their different façade systems, heights and geometries demonstrate the remarkable variety of architecture found throughout La Défense.
Tour Alto provides approximately 51,181 m² of office accommodation. The development incorporates two protected, landscaped terraces near the top of the tower and was designed around contemporary workplace requirements. It achieved high environmental standards, including HQE Exceptional and BREEAM Excellent certifications, while its design and construction formed part of the wider regeneration of the Boulevard Circulaire and the connection between La Défense and neighbouring Courbevoie.
The surrounding towers reinforce the significance of La Défense as a laboratory for modern commercial architecture. The district combines buildings from several generations, ranging from the monumental towers of the original business district to newer developments characterised by complex façades, sustainable design and highly engineered structures. Tour Alto contributes to this evolving skyline through its unusual curved geometry rather than relying on the conventional rectangular office-tower form.
