KwaDukuza eGoli Hotel rises prominently above Johannesburg’s Central Business District in this detailed aerial photograph, capturing one of the city’s most recognisable high-rise landmarks within the dense urban fabric of the inner city. The building’s distinctive blue-green glazed façade contrasts strongly with the surrounding concrete, brick and stone towers, while the elevated perspective reveals the remarkable concentration of commercial buildings and streets that define central Johannesburg.
Located at 84 Smal Street in the Johannesburg CBD, the building is part of a larger twin-tower hotel complex with a long and distinctive history. The main tower rises approximately 140 metres and contains 40 storeys, making it one of Johannesburg’s significant high-rise buildings. The complex was originally developed as Tollman Towers before being substantially redeveloped and reopened in 1985 as the Johannesburg Sun and Towers.
The architect associated with the main tower is SKM Architects, while Grinaker-LTA is recorded as the main contractor. Its architectural language reflects the late-modern commercial architecture that shaped Johannesburg’s skyline during the 1970s and 1980s, combining a strong vertical tower form with extensive glazed curtain-walling and a substantial podium. The reflective façade gives the building a changing appearance as it captures the surrounding cityscape and sky.
The building was later renamed KwaDukuza eGoli, a name associated with the idea of a “gathering place in the City of Gold.” It briefly reopened in 2002 in connection with the World Summit on Sustainable Development before subsequently closing again.
This aerial view provides more than a study of the tower itself. The surrounding streets, smaller commercial buildings, dense blocks and contrasting architectural styles illustrate the layered development of Johannesburg’s CBD. The photograph captures the relationship between the large-scale towers of the city centre and the finer-grain urban environment at street level, where older buildings, retail activity, traffic and pedestrian movement sit alongside Johannesburg’s modernist skyline.
