This low-angle photograph captures The Onyx, one of Cape Town’s best-known adaptive reuse projects, on the Heerengracht in the city’s Foreshore district.
The building was originally Nedbank’s head office, completed in 1968: a black glass and steel tower in the modernist International Style. Developer Signatura, working with Robert Silke & Partners, converted it into luxury apartments and hotel suites, which opened in 2018.
The architects kept the building’s dark, gridded curtain wall and added a column of curved white aluminium balconies. Seen from below, the balconies rise like a sculptural spine through the black glazing. The contrast between white and black, and between the curves and the grid, sums up how the project turned a corporate office block into a place for city living.
The strong vertical perspective, bright sun and green foliage framing the shot make this a striking image of heritage and contemporary design working together.
