eraco JB2 Data Centre is a major data centre facility located at the Bredell Campus in Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg, Gauteng. Completed in November 2017, JB2 was developed by Teraco Data Environments as a large-scale carrier, cloud and vendor-neutral data centre serving South Africa and the wider African market. The facility was built to international hyperscaler specifications and is strategically positioned approximately 5 km from O.R. Tambo International Airport and 20 km from Johannesburg’s city centre.
The JB2 facility represents an important stage in the development of South Africa’s digital infrastructure. When completed, the Bredell data centre provided more than 6,000 square metres of technical deployment space and a resilient power supply of 24 MVA. Teraco described the facility as its fourth data centre and as Africa’s first hyperscale data centre. The project was constructed in approximately 12 months, reflecting the rapid development of large-scale data centre infrastructure to accommodate growing demand for cloud computing, enterprise IT, internet services and digital content.
Architecturally, JB2 differs from the conventional image of a commercial office or institutional building. The facility was deliberately developed as a warehouse-type structure rather than a traditional brick-and-mortar building, reflecting the highly specialised requirements of data centre operations. The structure incorporates heavily loaded floors, extensive technical areas and dedicated office accommodation. Engineering documentation records approximately 6,850 square metres of warehouse space together with 1,430 square metres of offices.
The building’s architecture is therefore driven primarily by operational resilience, security, power distribution, cooling and technical deployment rather than conventional architectural expression. Teraco states that JB2 incorporates elements from different tiering solutions and industry best practices, with systems designed for concurrent maintainability and additional fault tolerance. Its infrastructure includes resilient backup power systems, redundant equipment and systems supporting continuous data centre operations.
The Bredell location also forms part of a larger technology and infrastructure cluster. JB2 is now part of Teraco’s Bredell Campus alongside JB4, which has subsequently expanded the campus significantly. The wider Bredell development provides access to network service providers, cloud platforms, systems integrators and other digital infrastructure, reinforcing the campus’s role within South Africa’s interconnected technology ecosystem.
