Opened in 2009, the Port of Ngqura forms part of the Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and was developed as a major deep-water container and transhipment hub. The port is strategically positioned approximately 20 km north-east of Gqeberha and serves international shipping routes linking Southern Africa with markets in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas.
The image also captures the wider industrial landscape surrounding the port, with the Coega SEZ extending inland across a large area of planned industrial, logistics and infrastructure development. The port’s four-berth container terminal has a depth of approximately 16 metres and is equipped with ship-to-shore container cranes. In addition to containers, the port supports dry bulk, liquid bulk, automotive and breakbulk operations.
The Port of Ngqura continues to expand its role as a strategic logistics and industrial gateway for the Eastern Cape and South Africa. Current development plans also include new energy-related infrastructure, including planned LNG facilities and a proposed liquid bulk terminal
