Johannesburg’s Rea Vaya bus system, one of Africa’s first bus rapid transit networks, has reached Sandton. Its Phase 1C route runs from the inner city through Alexandra into the financial district, and Katherine Street is the main corridor for the Sandton stretch.

The Katherine Street station was the first station built for this part of the network, and it became the model for the rest. Its low-floor platform lets passengers step straight onto the new low-entry buses, which suits commuters with prams, luggage or limited mobility. Passengers also get seating, lighting, live travel information and free Wi-Fi.

The road around the station has been rebuilt as well. Katherine Street now has dedicated bus lanes up to Sasol Place, wider pavements, cycle paths and better drainage. Sandspruit Bridge has gone from two lanes to six, and a cable-stayed bridge takes the buses over the M1. The city announced that the Katherine Street works were finished in March 2026
