Kaivopuisto Shoreline and Suomenlinna, Helsinki, Finland

This photograph captures the rocky shoreline of Kaivopuisto (Kaivopuisto Park) on the southern coast of Helsinki, looking across the Baltic Sea towards the Suomenlinna Sea Fortress and the islands of the Helsinki archipelago. The rugged granite shoreline is characteristic of Helsinki’s coastal landscape, while the road and landscaped waterfront behind the rocks form part of the city’s southern recreational waterfront.

In the distance, the distinctive Suomenlinna Church can be seen among the historic buildings of the fortress. Suomenlinna occupies a group of islands approximately 4 km southeast of central Helsinki and is one of Finland’s most significant historic maritime sites. The fortress was established in the 18th century as a Swedish naval fortress and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Kaivopuisto’s shoreline forms part of Helsinki’s extensive southern coastal recreation network. Ehrenströmintie runs along the waterfront, with views towards Suomenlinna, Harakka, Särkkä and the wider Helsinki archipelago. Historic descriptions of the area specifically identify long sea views from Kaivopuisto towards Suomenlinna.
