Jewel City is a major urban regeneration project in Johannesburg’s eastern CBD, transforming a previously walled-off precinct associated with the city’s diamond and precious-metals trade into a vibrant mixed-use neighbourhood. Located between the historic Maboneng precinct and the ABSA precinct, the development incorporates six city blocks, combining refurbished industrial buildings—some dating from the 1930s—with new residential development.
Designed by GASS Architecture Studios, the project was conceived around reconnecting Jewel City with the surrounding urban fabric. A central pedestrianised section of Fox Street forms the spine of the precinct, with apartments, retail, offices, commercial space, a school, medical facilities and recreational amenities arranged around public spaces. GASS Architecture Studios worked with Daniel Rebel Landscape Architects on the public realm and landscape design, placing particular emphasis on creating a more open and pedestrian-friendly inner-city environment.
The development was delivered as part of a two-year programme, with the first residential units becoming available in December 2019 and the precinct officially launched in September 2020. Jewel City represents an important example of adaptive reuse and inner-city regeneration in Johannesburg, retaining elements of the area’s industrial heritage while introducing contemporary residential, commercial and public uses.
