The Illovo Sugar Head Office forms one half of the prominent Ridgeview and Illovo Head Office complex in Ridgeside, uMhlanga, Durban. Completed in 2016, the development comprises two primary office buildings — the bespoke Illovo building to the south-east and Ridgeview, a multi-tenanted office building to the north-west — arranged around a landscaped central courtyard. The complex occupies a prominent site near Umhlanga Rocks Drive and the Gateway shopping precinct, forming part of the transformation of uMhlanga into a major commercial and mixed-use centre.
Designed by Elphick Proome Architects, the Illovo building was developed specifically as the corporate headquarters and end-user premises for Illovo Sugar. Its distinctive architectural language is defined by curving forms, extensive glazing and shaped, fritted-glass solar fins that provide solar protection while creating a visually permeable façade. Stepped building forms respond to the site’s topography and provide expansive views from the upper office levels. Internally, the Illovo building incorporates a dramatic triple-volume space containing a suspended boardroom and staircase, together with shared facilities including a gym.
The development was designed around open-plan office accommodation with central circulation and service cores, supported by a substantial stepped podium containing semi-basement parking. Ridgeview was designed for conventional multi-tenant occupation and achieved a 5-Star Green Star SA sustainability rating, while the Illovo building provided dedicated accommodation for the various components of the Illovo Sugar group.
