This image shows one of Cape Town’s best-known landmarks, the unfinished Foreshore Freeway, also known as the city’s “bridge to nowhere.” The city approved the elevated highway in the 1960s, and by 1977 sections of it had been built and paved. Then the money ran out and finishing the scheme never became a priority. Several spans have been left disconnected, ending in mid-air, for nearly fifty years.
Shot from street level with a wide lens, the image makes the most of the drama. The curved underside of the deck sweeps across the sky, the board-marked concrete and weathered edges are clearly visible, and the deck stops sharply above a lone central column. More incomplete spans recede into the background. Brick apartment blocks, office buildings, a busy road and a freshly marked parking lot below place the structure firmly in the working city.
The bridges have become an icon of Cape Town. They have appeared in film and TV productions, including Black Mirrorand Fear Factor, and have been the subject of several plans to complete or redevelop them, none of which has yet gone ahead.
