A Caterpillar excavator works through the remains of the former IBM office campus at 70 Rivonia Road, Sandhurst, Johannesburg, during the large-scale demolition and redevelopment of the site. The machine is positioned on an extensive field of crushed concrete, reinforcing steel, masonry and other construction debris as the former office structures are dismantled.
The site formed part of the former IBM South Africa campus, which comprised interconnected two- and three-storey commercial buildings. The demolition was technically complex because portions of the structures stood above a concrete basement parking slab that was retained. The demolition contractor used carefully sequenced methods and smaller machinery in areas where the underlying structure had to be protected.
The site has since been transformed into LXX Sandhurst, a contemporary lifestyle and retail destination at 70 Rivonia Road. Designed by Skyscape Architects for The Cavaleros Group, LXX Sandhurst opened in July 2024 and incorporates retail, restaurants, cafés and lifestyle businesses around a landscaped open-air setting.
