Bosjes Chapel at Bosjes Estate, Western Cape, South Africa

The Bosjes Chapel is one of South Africa’s most distinctive examples of contemporary religious architecture, set within the landscape of the Breede River Valley in the Western Cape. Located at Bosjes Estate near Ceres, the chapel is defined by its dramatic white concrete roof, which rises and falls in a series of sweeping curves against the surrounding Witzenberg Mountains.

Designed by South African-born architect Coetzee Steyn of Steyn Studio, in collaboration with TV3 Architects, the chapel was completed in 2016. Its sculptural form was conceived as a response to the dramatic mountain landscape, while also referencing the traditional Cape Dutch gables found throughout the Western Cape. The roof is constructed as a thin concrete shell, with each undulating section extending down towards the ground to create the building’s distinctive wave-like profile.

The architecture draws inspiration from Psalm 36:7, as well as the simplicity of historic Moravian mission churches established on Cape Dutch farms. Rather than adopting the conventional form of a church with a prominent spire, the Bosjes Chapel opens itself towards the surrounding landscape. Extensive glazed façades frame views of the mountains, vineyards and gardens, creating a strong connection between the interior and its natural setting.

The sweeping concrete forms appear almost like waves or folded fabric, while the dark glazed walls provide a strong visual counterpoint to the bright structure.
