BluBird Shopping Centre is a distinctive neighbourhood shopping centre located at the corner of Atholl Oaklands Road and Fort Street in Birnam, Johannesburg. Situated between Atholl, Melrose and the surrounding northern Johannesburg suburbs, the centre occupies a well-established suburban setting and provides a more intimate alternative to the large enclosed shopping malls that dominate many parts of the city.
BluBird opened in 2007 and was developed by Peter Behrmann. From its inception, the centre was conceived around a different approach to suburban retail architecture. Rather than creating a conventional inward-looking enclosed mall, the development was designed as an open-air shopping environment, incorporating outdoor pedestrian spaces, landscaping, restaurants and retail units arranged around a landscaped public environment. Contemporary reporting at the time described it as a compact shopping destination that combined the convenience of a mall with the atmosphere of high-street shopping.
One of the most important characteristics of BluBird is its relationship with the surrounding landscape. The centre incorporates a municipal garden into its setting, creating an unusually green environment for a Johannesburg shopping centre. The developers undertook to upgrade and maintain the garden, integrating the public green space with the retail development. This creates a softer relationship between the buildings, pedestrian areas and surrounding suburban streets.
