Alexandra Township, commonly known as Alex, is one of South Africa’s oldest and most historically significant townships. Established in 1912, Alexandra occupies a unique place in Johannesburg’s history as one of the few urban areas where Black South Africans were able to purchase land during the early twentieth century. Located adjacent to the city’s financial and commercial hubs, including Sandton, Alexandra has evolved into a vibrant, densely populated community with a rich cultural heritage and a resilient entrepreneurial spirit.
Today, Alexandra is a dynamic urban township comprising residential neighbourhoods, retail centres, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, transport infrastructure, and community amenities. The township has benefited from various urban renewal and infrastructure development initiatives aimed at improving housing, roads, public spaces, and municipal services. Alexandra remains an important economic and cultural centre within the City of Johannesburg and continues to play a vital role in the region’s social and economic landscape.
