52 Katherine Street – Clyde & Co Offices, Sandton, Johannesburg

52 Katherine Street is a distinctive contemporary office development in Sandton, Johannesburg, photographed here from Katherine Street with the Clyde & Co identity clearly visible on the building’s façade. Designed by Paragon Architects for Alchemy Properties, the building forms part of the rapidly developing Katherine Street commercial precinct and was created as a high-quality P-grade office development. The project occupies a prominent corner position at Katherine Street and Albertyn Avenue, giving it strong visibility within one of Johannesburg’s most important commercial districts.

The architecture is characterised by a bold combination of dark full-height glazing, pale marble-like cladding and pronounced horizontal and vertical lines. Its most distinctive feature is the undulating geometry of the façades, which produces a rhythmic sequence of projecting and recessed sections as the building responds to the constrained and sloping site. The design incorporates terraces and balconies along the upper levels, while landscaped areas and private courtyards introduce softer elements into the compact urban setting. According to the project description, the geometry was carefully developed to maximise the permissible floor area, site coverage and building height while responding to fire-break requirements and the site’s complicated configuration.

The four-storey building contains approximately 5,251 square metres of office accommodation above 3.5 basement parking levels. Its white façade was deliberately conceived to contrast with the darker architectural language of the nearby Sasol headquarters, giving 52 Katherine Street its own visual identity within the wider precinct. Full-vision, low-emissivity windows bring natural light into the office spaces while providing views across Sandton, while the projecting balconies and recessed courtyards contribute depth and texture to the façade.

Construction began in 2019 following bulk earthworks, with completion originally planned for late 2020. The project was affected by the COVID-19 lockdown and construction challenges, including delays in restarting the site and sourcing materials, with final completion subsequently moved to April 2021.

Today, 52 Katherine Street is home to international law firm Clyde & Co’s Johannesburg office. Clyde & Co lists its Johannesburg office at 52 Katherine Street, Wierda Valley, Sandton, where the firm provides legal services across areas including insurance, infrastructure, construction, energy, mining and commercial disputes.
