Lilian Ngoyi Square and Women’s Living Heritage Monument – Aerial View, Pretoria

The Women’s Living Heritage Monument occupies a prominent position within Lilian Ngoyi Square. The building was created as a cultural and heritage institution dedicated to recognising the contribution of women to South Africa’s liberation history. It incorporates exhibition, training and educational facilities, while the surrounding public space forms part of the site’s wider heritage interpretation. The monument was unveiled on 9 August 2016, marking the 60th anniversary of the 1956 Women’s March to the Union Buildings.

From above, the architectural composition of the monument is particularly apparent. The building is arranged around a large open forecourt, with broad paved areas, landscaped planting, curved walls and carefully defined pedestrian routes. The central circular water feature creates a strong geometric focal point within the square, while the curved roof and sweeping façade of the main building contrast with the more rectilinear commercial architecture surrounding it.

The aerial perspective also reveals the building’s extensive roofscape, including large areas of photovoltaic panels. These panels form a distinctive geometric pattern across the roof and demonstrate how contemporary building services and energy infrastructure have been incorporated into the architecture.

The monument’s relationship with the public square is an important part of its design. A series of paved terraces and landscaped areas extend between the building and surrounding streets, creating spaces for movement, gathering and remembrance. The square also incorporates elements of the site’s history through its Memory Walk, which records the transformation of the location from an early market area through its later history as Strijdom Square and its eventual renaming as Lilian Ngoyi Square.
