Simuma Limestone Quarry near Port Shepstone – NPC Cement Mining Operation

This aerial photograph captures the Simuma Limestone Quarry, an important raw-material source for cement production in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Located approximately 20 kilometres inland from Port Shepstone in the Ugu District Municipality, the quarry forms an integral part of the Simuma cement and clinker operation. The open-cast mine is set within a predominantly rural and densely vegetated landscape, creating a striking contrast between the extensive excavation and processing areas and the surrounding green hills and natural vegetation. Current technical documentation confirms that NPC operates the Simuma cement and clinker facility together with the Simuma quarry, where limestone is extracted and transported to the cement works for clinker and cement production.

Location: Simuma, approximately 20 kilometres inland from Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, within the Ugu District Municipality. The quarry is situated in the wider Marble Delta geological area associated with the Umzimkhulu and Umzimkulwana river systems. The surrounding landscape is characteristic of the humid subtropical South Coast, with extensive indigenous vegetation, rolling terrain and scattered rural properties. The Simuma quarry lies north of the cement plant, with the Mzimkhulwana River separating the two operations.
