We Went Looking for Our Competition Across Africa. Here’s What We Found.

Sandton at night

When you run a niche business, it’s tempting to reach for big claims — “the biggest,” “the best,” “the only one.” We wanted to do something a little more useful: actually look at the landscape and share what we found.

MarketPlace.InfrastructurePhotos is a South African stock photography marketplace focused entirely on one thing — architecture, aerial, construction and infrastructure imagery, shot by our own team and licensed a maximum of five times per image before it’s retired. We wanted to understand how that positioning compares across the continent, so we did some research.

What We Looked At

We reviewed 20 African markets — Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt and Morocco, plus all 16 SADC member states (South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Mozambique, Angola, Tanzania, DRC, Mauritius, Madagascar, Malawi, Lesotho, Eswatini, Comoros and Seychelles) — looking specifically for:

  • Marketplaces/Stock Photography sites like GettyImages (rather than commissioned photography services)
  • A focus on infrastructure, architecture, or aerial imagery
  • Pre-shot, licensed stock images sold online
  • Some form of built-in licensing exclusivity

What We Found

Nigeria is still building toward this. Its advertising regulator recently convened a committee to lay the groundwork for the country’s first national stock image bank — a general-purpose initiative, still in the early planning stage.

Kenya has a well-established aerial and drone photography services sector — companies doing mapping, LiDAR survey, and commissioned drone shoots for construction and property clients. These are excellent at what they do, but they operate as project-based service providers rather than stock marketplaces.

Egypt and Morocco are well represented on the major global stock platforms, mostly with tourism and general architecture imagery, though we didn’t come across a locally-owned infrastructure-specialist marketplace in either market.

South Africa is home to Africa Media Online, a long-established and well-regarded African photo library. It covers a broader range of subject matter than infrastructure alone, and doesn’t appear to use a limited-edition licensing model — a different approach to ours, serving a somewhat different niche.

Across the rest of the SADC region — Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Mozambique, Angola, Tanzania and the DRC — we mostly found general global stock imagery (tourism, wildlife, cityscapes) and infrastructure investment databases, rather than dedicated photography marketplaces. The smaller SADC economies didn’t show up in our research at all in this space, which likely reflects market size more than anything else.

What This Tells Us

We’re not claiming to have covered every corner of a 54-country continent — that would be overreaching. But across the 20 markets we did look at, we didn’t come across another marketplace combining infrastructure specialization, in-house photography, and this particular licensing model. That’s genuinely useful for us to know, and hopefully interesting context for anyone else thinking about this space.

Why It Matters for Our Clients

For architects, engineers, developers, and agencies who need imagery that stands out rather than blending into the background of a hundred other reports, that gap is meaningful. Every image in our library is high res (shot on ground or off a helicopoter) and licensed to a maximum of five buyers, so the building you feature is unlikely to turn up in someone else’s campaign next month.

We’d genuinely welcome your input. Our research has limits — desktop researches don’t catch everything, especially smaller or locally-known operators, and we’d rather know about a gap in our research than not. If you’ve come across an infrastructure, architecture, or aerial photography marketplace anywhere in Africa that we missed, we’d love to hear about it — we’ll gladly update our thinking (and credit the source).
