This aerial photograph provides a detailed view of the Port Control Building, also historically known as the Lourens Muller Building and informally as the Portnet Tower, at the Port of Cape Town. Positioned at the end of the South Arm beside Duncan Dock, the distinctive modernist tower is one of the most recognisable structures within Cape Town’s working harbour. The building houses the Cape Town Port Control Office, together with offices associated with the Harbour Master, harbour management and other administrative functions responsible for the operation of the port.

The approximately 55-metre-high building is characterised by a strong central concrete core from which its operational floors are cantilevered, culminating in the distinctive glazed control level and broad projecting roof at the top. Its elevated position and extensive glazing provide port-control personnel with commanding views across the harbour and its approaches, supporting the safe coordination and movement of vessels. The tower dates from the 1970s and took over harbour administration functions from the earlier Port Captain’s Building in 1975.

The wider photograph captures the industrial character of Duncan Dock, including large transit sheds, cargo-handling areas, working vessels, quays and marine infrastructure. Duncan Dock was constructed between 1938 and 1945 as a major expansion of Cape Town’s harbour and remains one of the port’s principal operational areas. Beyond the harbour, the dense high-rise skyline of the Cape Town CBD and the lower slopes of Table Mountain provide a dramatic urban backdrop.
