Jukskei Quarry, AfriSam Aggregate, Midrand

R1800,00

This aerial photograph captures Jukskei Quarry, operated by AfriSam as one of its major aggregate-producing operations in Gauteng. The extensive open-pit granite quarry is located in Jukskei View, Midrand, at the intersection of Old Pretoria Road and Bridal Veil Road. The photograph shows the quarry’s stepped extraction benches, haul roads, active working areas and water-filled sections of the excavation, with the rapidly expanding Midrand urban landscape surrounding the operation.

Mining at Jukskei Quarry began in the late 1950s, when the operation was initially known as Hippo Quarries. At the time, the quarry was located well outside the developed areas of Midrand. Decades of rapid urbanisation have since brought residential, commercial and industrial development right up to the quarry’s boundaries, including the enormous Waterfall City development visible in the wider landscape. AfriSam describes Jukskei as one of its busiest aggregate quarries, producing construction materials for the rapidly growing Gauteng market.

The quarry extracts granite, which AfriSam identifies as the rock type at its Jukskei operation. The resulting aggregate is used in a range of construction applications, including concrete aggregate, roadstone, base and sub-base materials. AfriSam’s technical documentation identifies Jukskei granite as an established aggregate source within its Gauteng portfolio.

The photograph provides a striking illustration of the interaction between extractive industry and urban development. Major highways, commercial developments and new residential areas surround an industrial excavation that predates much of the modern Midrand landscape. Despite the extensive urbanisation around it, Jukskei Quarry remains an active AfriSam aggregate operation.
