This aerial photograph captures Fourways High School in Fourways, Johannesburg, with its extensive sporting grounds and surrounding suburban landscape clearly visible. The school occupies a substantial site along Kingfisher Drive, with rugby and cricket fields, hockey facilities, tennis courts and other sporting infrastructure forming a prominent green space within the rapidly developed northern suburbs.
Fourways High School opened its doors in 1988 with just 145 learners and eight teachers. At the time, the area was still largely undeveloped and the school was affectionately known as the “Farm School.” The original campus consisted of B Block and initially served only Standard 6 and Standard 7 learners. As the surrounding Fourways area expanded, the school grew substantially, adding an auditorium, swimming pool, pavilion, astroturf and additional sporting facilities. Its first matric class graduated in 1991.
The school has since become an established public secondary school serving the Fourways and wider northern Johannesburg communities. Its sporting facilities are a significant feature of the campus, supporting athletics, cricket, hockey, rugby, soccer, swimming, tennis, netball and other activities. The school’s current facilities include floodlit fields, an astroturf and multi-surface courts.
The photograph also illustrates the dramatic transformation of Fourways from the relatively undeveloped landscape surrounding the school when it opened in 1988 into a densely settled suburban and commercial district. The wider view includes extensive residential development, commercial centres and major transport routes, with the northern Johannesburg skyline visible on the horizon.
